The Longmont Theatre Company, Inc. began in the spring of 1957 when the local hospital auxiliary committee had the idea to put on a play to raise money to benefit the new Longmont Community Hospital. The auxiliary members created a local amateur theatre group that later became known as the Potpourri Players. The first play, “The Solid Gold Cadillac” was a success and the auxiliary members presented a $1,500 check to the hospital. The second performance that summer was “Roomful of Roses” setting a schedule of two plays a year from the Potpourri Players from 1957 to 1964. However, in the years of 1965 through 1968, the theatre group only had one show a year.

In 1969, the Potpourri Players broke ties with the hospital. The group had accomplished their fund raising goals for the new hospital. From 1976 to 1981, the company went to three shows a year opening with “The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-In-The-Moon Marigolds”, “Residence Club” and “Choose America”.

Potpourri performed at various locations throughout Longmont including the old Roosevelt Park Clubhouse, the Elks Club and for a while settled into the old Longmont High School on Main Street with an agreement to refurbish its theatre in exchange for a $1 a year lease. In 1988, the theatre group incorporated as the Longmont Theatre Company, Inc. with the address of Main Street School, Longmont, CO. However, shortly thereafter, the school district needed the space and reopened the school as Main Street Elementary. In 1990, the Longmont Theatre Company worked with Richard W. Klein, owner of the old Trojan Theatre at the present 513 Main Street location to purchase the historic building. By the fall of 1992, the first production, “Fiddler on the Roof”, opened in the newly renovated theatre.

On August 20, 2015, the Longmont Theatre Company celebrates the opening of the 59th Season by honoring the legacy of the theatre’s people and the community who have contributed to its long success. In their honor tonight, we ILLUMINATE THE MARQUEE.

The Longmont Theatre Company will celebrate 63 years of live community theatre in 2022 and is one of the oldest nonprofits in Longmont; and, the oldest live community theatre company in Colorado producing quality entertainment at a reasonable price, and support educational and outreach programs to give back to our community. We are a LONGMONT LANDMARK as a theatre company and as owner of the 300 seat historic theatre at 513 Main Street.
